El Alcázar de Guadalajara se convertirá en Palacio de Congresos

The City Council of Guadalajara presented today in a press conference the first phase of the Alcázar rehabilitation project, aimed at providing it with a definitive use with a focus on tourism, heritage, and congresses.

The presentation was given by the Second Deputy Mayor and Councilor for Urban Planning, Alfonso Estéban, and the Third Deputy Mayor and Councilor for European Funds, Municipal Public Works, and Infrastructures, Santiago López Pomeda, accompanied by the head of the Urban Planning department, César Gismera, who outlined the planned actions in this project, framed within the EDIL Strategy funded by European funds.

Since we took office, with Mayor Ana Guarinos at the helm, we have considered that the Alcázar needed a comprehensive intervention that would culminate in a definitive use that would be beneficial for the residents of Guadalajara and that everyone could enjoy,” said Alfonso Estéban.

A project in three phases that begins with the consolidation of historical structures and the conditioning of the stables.

The rehabilitation project will be carried out in three phases: consolidation of existing walls, vaults and conditioning of the stables as an exhibition space; transformation of the two large halls that will become the Congress and Convention Center of the city; and conversion of the central courtyard into an archaeological garden.

The initial phase presented begins with the tender of the technical assistance contract for the drafting of the basic and execution project, construction management, execution management, archaeological monitoring, and safety and health coordination.

The drafting has a deadline of 4 months and includes the work of consolidating walls and vaults, as well as the conditioning of the former stables as an exhibition space. The result of this first phase will be visible once the 24-month execution period after the signing of the construction contract is completed.

The goal of this strategy, driven by our Mayor Ana Guarinos, is to enhance the city through the recovery of historical heritage and provide citizens and visitors with the opportunity to enjoy a space like the Alcázar,” said Santiago López Pomeda.

Future phases of the project

During the press conference, both deputy mayors also detailed the upcoming work of the phases whose projects are still in progress:

  • Second phase: transformation of two large halls in the precinct into the future Congress and Convention Center of the city, with a design tailored to the current needs of Guadalajara.

  • Third phase: creation of an archaeological garden in the central courtyard, a space open to the public where possible archaeological remains found in the area will be valued.

With this project, the City Council aims to give use and value to a cultural asset, recovering a heritage space and providing it with a definitive use for the benefit of the city.
