The Spanish singer and songwriter Angie Sánchez from Toledo, who debuted with her solo album ‘Tiempo al Tiempo’ after accompanying great artists like Leiva, Vega, and Sidecars, already has in mind the name of her second album and has announced that she will release new songs soon.
Since her childhood, Sánchez has always shown interest in music. Starting with the piano at the age of 5 and with Norah Jones as a reference, the artist made her way through blues groups that played at the Madrid venue ‘La Coquette’ and, from that moment on, she had the opportunity to collaborate with Jacobo Serra, Julián Maeso, and later with Leiva and Sidecars.
But it wasn’t until 2016, after becoming "obsessively" hooked on Quique González’s album ‘Me matas y me necesitas’, that the artist discovered that her connection to music and her collaboration with recognized artists could go further, writing and singing her own songs.
In this way, three years ago, when the artist was going through a "very raw" emotional moment, she began to compose and shape her first album as "a process of healing and therapy," parallel to her personal moment, and thanks to her introspective nature, the artist was able to unravel the lyrics of the songs.
"It was truly a complete healing to see that from something so raw I could create something like a song," the artist has stated.
In addition to personal experiences, artists like Quique González, Iván Ferreiro, Zahara, Vega, or Amaral have influenced the artist, who has also been inspired by the poetry of Karmelo Iribarren and Loreto Sesma, who have "nourished and inspired" Sánchez a lot when writing.
Behind the key figure in the production process is Ricky Falkner, "a very important part" for the artist, who has accompanied her in a creation process divided into several stages. "The first stage we recorded as is usual, with a band playing the songs live and recording them in the studio," explained Sánchez.
Regarding the second phase, the artist explained that they wanted to go "further." In this way, she and Falkner went to a remote house in the countryside, where his commitment to both the pre-production phase and the songs on the album, where he sang, did backing vocals, and recorded drums, was key to the success of the album.
"That’s why sometimes I find the producer’s work a bit unappreciated, because you make the album, you dive deep into the creation of the album and then people remember the artist, " said Sánchez, highlighting the producer’s work, as she has stated that she has to mention "Ricky Falkner’s name many times so that it is known that he is 50 percent of this album and many others."
Working hand in hand, Sánchez and Falkner have formed a perfect team in the studio because he has brought the calm that Sánchez needs, even though he has to "play with a thousand bands and produce for as many," being like "a craftsman of the studio."
Thanks to the creative process she shared with the producer, Sánchez has announced that she will publish a book with the doodles she has been doing during the construction of her album. "While Falkner was in the studio putting things together, I have always been drawing with stained hands and I have also written some thoughts," the singer-songwriter assured.
Her drawing skills are combined with damascene, a traditional and familiar craftsmanship that Sánchez uses as meditation and to expand her musical knowledge while shaping her pieces.
Although some years have passed since the creation process of her first album and the artist has felt that the songs age very quickly, listening to her songs after some time, being "a different person, is beautiful, because it is a personal retrospective, whether due to concerns or stylistic development within the music industry," she pointed out.
"Before a next album, I will release a couple of new songs so that they don’t age too much. And yes, I already have the title of the next album and yes, I am looking forward to it," she assured, indicating that she has had new songs in the works for some time and that she still doesn’t know if her second album will be released in full or with previews.
FEAR OF GOING UNNOTICED
Before her debut album, ‘Tiempo al Tiempo’, saw the light, Sánchez confessed that she was afraid, especially that it would go unnoticed without a big marketing effort behind it, but to her surprise, she has received very affectionate messages showing that listeners have understood very well what the artist expresses in the album.
"Now people listen to songs in playlists and your album can go unnoticed and, in the end, many composers create a work that has its story, its beginning, its intro, and its ending," the artist expressed, advocating that people should take enough time to enjoy a complete work.
In her musical career, the artist fondly remembers the detail that Leiva had with her when he proposed to sing two songs with him at La Riviera. "For me, it was a very exciting and special moment because it was like traveling in first class. A total dream."
Regarding collaborations, Sánchez is clear that they have to arise naturally and has appreciated the support that the artists she has worked with have given her while being unknown, stating that "hopefully" she will have the opportunity again to share a project or stage with some of the artists she has collaborated with.
In her current professional moment, she is accompanying Vega as an opening act, playing the acoustic guitar, the piano, and doing backing vocals, touring "a lot" of cities and taking advantage of the opportunity that the artist gave her to open all the concerts with her songs, and besides, Sánchez has announced that she will soon announce the date of a concert.
