At the Plaza de Santo Domingo in Guadalajara, a new stop of the Tour Universo Mujer has been presented, which will take place on Saturday, June 7th, and will be part of the II Edition of the Sports Day.
The UM Tour will maintain its usual structure and will contribute to the extensive sports deployment designed by the Guadalajara City Council for that day. The activities carried out by the Federations and clubs at Santo Domingo Square will complement those that will take place in the other four locations chosen by the City Council (Plaza del Ayuntamiento, Plaza del Jardinillo, Parque de la Concordia, and Piscina San Roque).
Guadalajara will be the city that opens the ninth season of the Tour Universo Mujer and will become the 29th stage of the largest free outdoor sports event for all audiences. The Tour aims to promote women’s sports as the basis for the recognition of women in society, showcasing the efforts, challenges, and successes achieved by our athletes over the years.
The event was presided over by the Mayor of Guadalajara, Ana Guarinos, and was attended by Armengol Engonga, Sports Councillor; Bárbara Butragueño, Deputy Director General of Women and Sports at the Higher Sports Council; Óscar Narros, Institutional Delegate of Iberdrola in Castilla La Mancha; Noelia Florín, from the Iberdrola Sports Sponsorship team; the Tour’s godmother, gymnast Aimara Fajardo; and the Tour Universo Mujer director, Rubén González. Several representatives of the Federations and Clubs participating in this event also attended.
Ana Guarinos stated, «It will be a very special day for Guadalajara. Our city becomes the starting point of a journey that celebrates the strength, passion, and talent of women in sports.»
The Mayor highlighted that this Tour starts in a city that firmly believes in the transformative power of sports «as a way to live with healthy habits, to educate in values that serve for everything in life, and to move towards a more equal society. As the great tennis player Billie Jean King said: sports show that talent has no gender, and that equality is not a goal, but a path that is traveled every day. On that path, Guadalajara wants to be at the forefront.»
The Mayor indicated that the Guadalajara City Council has decisively opted for a sports model that is open, inclusive, and with a special focus on women’s sports, «being the land of great sports pioneers and having just placed one of its local women’s soccer teams, Dínamo, in the second Federation, we know that when girls see women succeeding in sports, they understand that they too can go far.»
On the other hand, Bárbara Butragueño stated, «The Tour Universo Mujer is undoubtedly one of the great flags of our commitment to sports practiced by women. At the Higher Sports Council, we greatly value its ability to raise awareness, bring role models closer to new generations, and demonstrate that sports practiced by women deserve the same recognition, resources, and media attention.»
Óscar Narros, Institutional Delegate of Iberdrola in Castilla La Mancha, emphasized, «I would like to highlight the ten years that Iberdrola has been supporting the Universo Mujer Tour program. For our company, the values of equality, equal opportunities through sports, and women’s participation in sports are vital. This program is a case of success and inclusion.»
Activities of the Tour Universo Mujer
Rubén González, Tour director, reviewed the activities of this stop, which will start on Saturday 7th at ten in the morning, «where everyone who comes to Santo Domingo Square will find a way to have fun and do sports. They can practice boxing, archery, soccer, handball, volleyball, fencing, table tennis… and enjoy master classes from the queen of zumba, Jessica Expósito.»
On behalf of the athletes participating in this great sports event for equality, the Tour’s godmother, gymnast Aimara Fajado, commented, «I want to thank the City Council and the Tour Universo Mujer for choosing me as the godmother. It makes me very excited to represent my city. On the 7th, I will be at Santo Domingo Square and will perform an exhibition with my team. I hope we can experience a special day of magic and women’s sports.»
At the end of the event, Bárbara Butragueño, Óscar Narros, Noelia Florín, and Aimara Fajardo presented Ana Guarinos with the commemorative badge for hosting the XXIX edition of the Tour Universo Mujer.
