Valdepeñas is once again mitigating the summer heat with its iconic feature. Over 4,000 decorative umbrellas are installed in the commercial streets of the town, with colors – red, green, yellow, and blue – commemorating the Jubilee Year.
This initiative by the Valdepeñas City Council started in 2014, promoting a significant tourist attraction that boosts both local commerce and hospitality. Every summer, the town, which dedicates this initiative to a theme, becomes the subject of viral photos on social media.
Julia Cejudo, the Deputy Mayor for Economic Promotion and Commerce, stated that «the main objective of installing the umbrellas is to support local commerce, providing shade for people while they go shopping. Additionally, we are a reference point in terms of tourism, as many people come and share their visit to Valdepeñas on all social networks.»
The streets Juan Alcaide and Pangino display crocheted umbrellas, made by users of the Municipal Center for Seniors in Lucero, in collaboration with social centers in the neighborhoods of Cachiporro and Virgen de la Cabeza, as well as students from the Popular University. In the rest of the streets, Virgen, Balbuena, Escuelas, Castellanos, and Real, decorative umbrellas have been installed, with colors – red, green, yellow, and blue – commemorating the Jubilee Year 2025.
Lastly, the installation of the umbrellas involved an investment of 11,500 euros, serving as a boost for commerce and hospitality during the summer season. It is also a charitable initiative, as once the summer is over, the umbrellas are donated to an NGO or social entity for symbolic sale at 1 euro.
