Alcampo has launched an adjustment plan with the closure of up to 25 supermarkets in Spain — including the one in Albacete — and the dismissal of 710 employees, which represents 3% of the workforce, made up of around 23,300 workers, as reported by the company.
With the aim of «increasing Alcampo’s proximity to its customers,» in 2023 the company acquired a package of 224 supermarkets, even though some of them did not fit its model, their location was not desirable, or they had an excessive effort rate, as indicated.
«In this transformation process, it is essential to recover the results and ensure sustainable growth in each and every store. That is why Alcampo is implementing a workforce adjustment plan, a decision that, although difficult, is responsible and necessary,» it stated.
The company, which has already communicated this plan to the workers’ representatives, has reaffirmed its willingness to «continue growing and creating value in Spanish society, advancing in the development of multi-format and multi-channel food commerce, offering the lowest price and ensuring a wide range of products and brands, and promoting the development of large and small national and local suppliers.»
The company has informed Europa Press that the number of affected establishments amounts to 152, of which 25 will be closures, although the final number has not yet been determined, and the rest will be affected by workforce adjustments.
«Commerce is undergoing a profound transformation, which is why Alcampo, over the past few years, has reinforced its investment in future projects evolving into a multi-format and multi-channel commerce, responding to new consumption trends, ensuring a more agile and personalized shopping experience for its customers, as well as developing its activities sustainably,» the company highlighted.
To adapt to these new purchasing habits where consumers prefer smaller, convenient, and tailored establishments, Alcampo has initiated a process of reducing the size of 15 of its hypermarkets.
Additionally, to guarantee the best shopping experience, Alcampo is carrying out the renovation and modernization of over 60 stores, as well as enhancing its online commerce.
It has also launched a logistics platform designed to achieve the highest operational efficiency and, environmentally, has signed a long-term agreement or PPA for the supply of renewable energy.
AFFECTED CENTERS
According to CCOO, the company has sent a list of the centers affected by the collective dismissal, which includes several hypermarkets, although the list does not specify which supermarkets will be closed.
According to the list, the affected hypermarkets are Alcorcón, La Vega, Majadahonda, all three in Madrid; Castellón, Albacete, and Sanlúcar, Jérez, and Sevilla Este in Andalusia.
Specifically, supermarkets in Madrid, La Rioja, Cantabria, Navarra, Castilla-La Mancha, Castilla y León, Galicia, Aragón, Asturias, and the Basque Country will be affected.
«This is all the information that the company has conveyed to us. Now, the next step in this process initiated by the management of Alcampo is to establish the negotiating table for the collective dismissal,» stated the union, pointing out that in the establishment meeting, the company is obligated to provide all necessary documentation to the unions for analysis and to start negotiations.
«From CCOO, we will confront this difficult situation, which is new to the company, with the clear objective of maintaining employment and, in the event of employee exits, ensuring they leave under the best possible conditions,» they emphasized.
