Almansa will host the second edition of the Old Town Gymkhana, an activity that aims to promote sports and the continuity of traditional games among first and second-grade students. The Councilor for Education and Sports, Alejandro Hernández, emphasized the importance of this activity within the educational program of the locality.
«First of all, thank you very much to Nacho Sevilla, director of CEIP Duque de Alba, for joining me today,» Hernández began. «Last year, for the first time, we decided to include this activity as part of the special events aimed at each school cycle. Up to that point, we only had the San Silvestre Escolar race for the second cycle, so we decided to expand the sports offer in collaboration with the Physical Education teachers of the primary schools.»
The councilor also announced the upcoming presentation of the tenth edition of the Mini Olympics, aimed at fifth and sixth-grade students. «However, today we focus on the Old Town Gymkhana, which will take place in Plaza Santa María and its adjacent streets, such as Calle de las Agustinas or Calle La Estrella,» explained Hernández. «I want to especially thank the Physical Education teachers for their efforts in the organization, as well as Nacho Sevilla, who will be the coordinator of the activity this year.»
The gymkhana will take place from 9:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. and will consist of 11 different tests. «It will be divided into two shifts: one group will participate first, and then the other. At the end of the day, girls and boys will receive a healthy lunch, which they can eat on the spot or take home,» detailed the councilor.
For his part, Nacho Sevilla highlighted the importance of collaboration between schools and the Almansa City Council to carry out this initiative. «From the Physical Education department of the schools, we set out to organize an activity for each cycle. This second term, we are organizing this gymkhana in which 11 classes will participate, each performing a different test in different locations of the old town,» he explained.
The event will include traditional games such as hopscotch, marbles, handkerchief tag, back shoe, and duck, duck, goose, among others. «We want to bring back classic games, those we grew up with and our parents, as unfortunately, they have been lost in favor of other forms of entertainment,» added Sevilla.
The event will involve the participation of more than 450 boys and girls, as well as the involvement of the teaching staff. «We hope that, like last year, the day will be a success and students will enjoy this educational and sports experience,» concluded Sevilla.
