The provincial deputy of Sports, Dani Sancha, accompanied by the provincial delegate of Education and Sport, Diego Pérez, the mayor of Riópar, Dani García, and the president of the Club Grego Racing Team, Grego Díaz, as the organizing entity, presented this Tuesday the ‘I Triathlon Río Mundo.’
The provincial deputy thanked the mayor of Riópar, for the numerous sports events organized throughout the year in his town, and the effort it entails. «We are facing one of the most important tests carried out in Riópar, both in terms of participation and organization due to its complexity.»
Sancha highlighted the experience and good work of the Club Grego Racing Team in organizing major events such as the Lagunas de Ruidera Triathlon or the Gigantes de Ruidera. «Now they face the first edition of the Río Mundo Triathlon, which has been very difficult to organize due to the complexity of combining three sports disciplines and being the first one of its kind in Castilla La Mancha in this ‘half’ modality,» he added.
«We value the effort made by the authorities, but also by the organizers, and that is why we have a call for grants for clubs that organize different events throughout the year in the province of Albacete, so that they have the financial support needed for these tests,» he argued.
The provincial deputy of Sports encouraged the Club Grego Racing Team to continue programming and celebrating these major events like the Río Mundo Triathlon, which will allow participants to experience a wonderful environment, providing more than just sports, offering nature, heritage, and seeking that family sports experience for everyone to spend a weekend in these locations.
On the other hand, the provincial delegate of Education and Sports conveyed to the race director Grego Díaz that this event «is in line with the priorities of the Government of Castilla La Mancha, such as the promotion and dissemination of sports, and as a key element in individual, social, and economic promotion of the territory.»
Diego Pérez referred to the rise of this sports modality in recent years, with an increase in sports licenses, especially among women, highlighting that the number of licenses in this sport in Albacete exceeds 1,200 licenses.
The mayor of Riópar thanked the unwavering support of the Provincial Council for this sports event, as well as the Sepei, Civil Protection, and the numerous volunteers who make it possible, emphasizing that from the City Council. «We reiterate our commitment and support for this first edition of the triathlon, which will surely be a success, and we will continue to promote and improve our infrastructure and support initiatives that put Riópar and also the Sierra on the map as a reference sports destination.»
Finally, the race director Grego Díaz thanked the institutional support, the municipalities in the area, the Triathlon Federation, and the collaboration of all sponsors.
The organization has confirmed the registration of more than 300 participants, 70 percent of whom come from the Levante and Madrid areas, and Grego Díaz indicated that «the event, despite being in its first year, will be highly accepted.»
«We are very lucky that all the events we hold in the Sierra de Alcaraz and in the Sierra del Segura are quite attractive, not only for people in the province but for people from all over Spain. I am fortunate that whenever we hold any event that bears the name of the Río Mundo or similar, it is a guarantee of success,» he emphasized.
Grego Díaz explained the technical aspects of the test, which will be divided into two modalities: the ‘sprint’ modality and the ‘half’ modality, medium distance. The ‘sprint’ modality will be eligible for the Dutri circuit of Albacete, supported by the Provincial Council of Albacete, and the ‘half’ modality will be the Middle Distance Triathlon Championship.
«It will be the longest and toughest Triathlon in all of Castilla-La Mancha. There is no other event that has this distance or this level of difficulty,» he stated.
The event, which will take place next Saturday, will consist of 1,900 meters of swimming in the Zapateros reservoir, in the municipality of Vianos, in the ‘Half’ modality, and in the ‘Sprint’ modality, 750 meters (1 lap).
The course will continue with an 82-kilometer bike route, where participants will pass through the towns of Zapateros, Reolid, Alcaraz, Villapalacios, El Salobre (through the Estrecho del Hocino), and Riópar in the ‘Half’ modality, with a positive elevation gain of 800 meters, and in the ‘Sprint’ modality, 34 km through Zapateros, Salobre, and Riópar, with a positive elevation gain of 450 meters.
Finally, the test will end with a 19.3-kilometer run in the ‘Half’ modality with 278 meters of positive elevation gain and a 5.7-kilometer run in the ‘Sprint’ modality with 55 meters of positive elevation gain.
