D.S.Z.C, accused of killing his roommate –A.G.M.M– by stabbing him in Yeles (Toledo) in May 2022, admitted on Monday that he killed the victim because he had threatened his family, which made him feel «very afraid». «I didn’t want to make him suffer, I just wanted to end his life.»
In the first session of the trial with a jury that took place on Monday at the Provincial Court of Toledo, it was revealed that both were Colombian and lived together. The accused explained that the victim asked him for a drug recipe, which led to him threatening his family.
Emphasizing the fear he felt for his family, because «killing a person in Colombia is very easy» for 200 euros, he recalled that on the morning of the incident they had a «very serious» argument. «I went to the car to get a cable and saw him coming with a knife,» the accused said about the victim.
Then, D.S.Z.C took another knife from the car and after both fell to the ground, according to the accused, he tried to take the knife from the victim and «his nerve kicked in». He then stabbed him, and saw him «lying on his side trying to breathe», noting that at that moment he realized that «he was still alive».
Although he did not make it clear how many knives he used to kill the victim or the number of stab wounds he inflicted, the accused stated that he «tried to move the body inside the house so that the neighbors would not see the terrifying scene».
Additionally, during the trial, he mentioned that they had been «partying for five days», specifying that they had consumed a lot of drugs for many days. «Our bodies couldn’t take it anymore.»
In his opening statement, the Prosecutor’s Office reaffirmed its request for murder –for which they are seeking 25 years in prison– adding that there was cruelty, as the stab wounds caused up to fifty injuries, and treachery, as the victim had no chance to defend themselves, with their body «practically inert».
On the defense side, during the trial, the lawyer stated that his client killed the victim because he saw a real threat to his family. After the first session, in statements to the media, he mentioned that the request for murder «would be ruled out» and also the fact that the accused had carried out the killing in self-defense.
«There are at least two recognized weapons, many cuts, many wounds. We believe that the crime of murder would be ruled out,» he stated.
The defense’s alternative is to try to prove that there was no cruelty, the lawyer said, and that there was no intention to cause pain. Regarding whether the victim could defend themselves or not, «that also needs to be evaluated,» he added.
