The accused of the 2022 Tarancón macho crime, J.E.M., has recognized the knife he used to end his wife’s life in the trial that began this Monday at the Provincial Court of Cuenca.
The accused only responded to the defense lawyer’s questioning, confirming that before the incident, he had arguments with his wife in which he even told her he was going to take her life.
It was recalled during the interrogation that there was a previous trial where his wife chose not to testify against her husband, resulting in his acquittal.
During the trial, a long orange knife was shown, which J.E.M. identified as the weapon he used to take advantage of his physical superiority and the family home environment, in the presence of his children, to end his wife’s life.
According to J.E.M.’s response to his lawyer, he inflicted «repeated stabbings, up to 34 blows, and finally killed her by cutting her throat, but not completely.»
Finally, the accused explained that at 9:00 a.m., after the events, he went to the social center of Tarancón to confess to an assistant and ask her to take care of his children.
Subsequently, he went to the Civil Guard station, where he spontaneously confessed what had happened. J.E.M. expressed to his lawyer that he understands the harm he has caused and has committed to making amends, at least by paying the civil liabilities to the best of his ability.
«BRAVERY» IN ACKNOWLEDGING THE FACTS
Before this interrogation, the defense lawyer wanted to emphasize «the bravery» of his client’s acknowledgment of the facts, not only on the day of the incident but throughout the investigation, stating that it could be «a first step towards some redemption.»
In contrast, in their initial statement, the prosecution wanted to highlight that the crime was not the result of a consensual fight and that the victim had no chance to defend herself.
Furthermore, they argue that it cannot be considered a «show of remorse» that after the crime, he called his wife’s relatives to «mock» them, using expressions like «since my mother will cry, let hers cry too,» among other phrases that will be presented in the documentary evidence.
