The Town Hall of Tomelloso takes a new step in revitalizing the Mercado de Abastos by launching a stable program of cultural and gastronomic activities over the next twelve months. This initiative is part of the project to revitalize the space, which was reopened last October after a complete rehabilitation.

This morning, Deputy Mayor Eloísa Perales presented the program, which is funded through the Recovery, Transformation, and Resilience Plan with NextGenerationEU funds. The program is developed in collaboration with agroGarabato cooperative, the entity responsible for managing the activities through a public procurement process. The goal is to continue establishing the Mercado as a local reference point for community activities. The planned activities, more than 25 to be scheduled over the next 12 months, will be free and open to all audiences, aiming to promote participation, social interaction, and the cultural identity of Tomelloso.

Renovated Space with History

Originally opened in 1932, the Mercado de Abastos has undergone a profound renovation that has preserved its traditional essence and original structure while adapting it to current uses and needs. Located next to Plaza de España, it combines commerce and hospitality in a functional, accessible environment open to new cultural and social proposals.

Its versatile configuration has already allowed it to host various events such as workshops, exhibitions, performances, and charitable activities, becoming an active space serving the community.

Activities with Local Identity

The program, as explained by the representative of the company awarded the contract, María García, will run throughout the year and include concerts, family performances, reading and children’s animation activities, as well as local product promotion initiatives. The participation of educational centers and other community entities will also be encouraged.
Among the confirmed activities are the folk music group Cuévano, the Choir of the Tomelloso Conservatory, performances such as magician Juanky, a permanent reading and games area, visits from the reading clubs of the Tomelloso Library, promotions of local products, and proposals for children and family audiences.

Furthermore, the program will progressively add new activities, and there will be opportunities for both market traders and citizens to suggest ideas and activities.

With this initiative, the Town Hall of Tomelloso strengthens its commitment to revitalizing the urban center and highlighting historical public spaces, linking them to the city’s cultural and social life.
