The Amapola Park in Valdepeñas now features an Insect Hotel, which was installed by students from the Special Education Center ‘María Luisa Navarro Margati’, in collaboration with the Environmental Department of the City Council, on this Thursday, International Day of the Environment.
The Deputy Mayor of the area, Gregorio Sánchez Yébenes, highlighted the importance of valuing the small things that may seem insignificant, as they play a crucial role in the ecosystem. He emphasized the significance of insects in pollination and biodiversity, stating that without them, the diversity we see on our planet would not exist. This installation of the Insect Hotel symbolizes the essential role insects play in maintaining biodiversity, especially on this 5th of June, International Day of the Environment.
Daniel Huertas, a teacher at the Special Education Center ‘María Luisa Navarro Margati’, explained that the activity also involved planting aromatic plants in the park, in addition to creating the insect hotel. He described it as a rewarding experience for the students to participate in building a piece of furniture from the school’s carpentry workshop, which was transformed into a cozy insect house. This activity allowed the students to engage with biodiversity, the community, and the Valdepeñas City Council.
The Insect Hotel is equipped with a QR code that links to information about its benefits. It features different spaces with unique characteristics that are welcoming to various insect species. These spaces provide shelter for insects like lacewings, wasps, and bees, protecting them from predators and harsh weather conditions. Additionally, the insects aid in pollination, leading to increased plant production and pest control.
The entrance of the Insect Hotel at Amapola Park serves as a significant contribution to the preservation of biodiversity and environmental sustainability. This initiative not only enhances the natural ecosystem but also educates and engages the community in the importance of protecting and supporting insect populations.
